I wish I could say that my father always had a passion for cooking and spatula in his hand; that the creation of Cecil’s Secret Sauce was the culmination of a lifelong dream. It would sure make his story easier to write, but it would be so cliche and boring! Cecil Lazenby was far from a mundane character! In reality, he had a passion for bullshittin
g with regulars in Cecil’s Pub and often had a Lord Calvert ditch in his hand. He had a smile that could light up a room and many were drawn to his spirited personality. An opportunist by nature, Cecil wore many hats, doing whatever it took to provide for his family. Expanding on his many talents, he was a jack-of-all-trades and seemed to master them all.
In 2000, he purchased the smoker trailer and began experimenting with different foods and flavors, even smoking a BBQ chicken pizza for dinner! The network of friends he developed from owning Cecil’s Pub provided the perfect word-of-mouth marketing necessary to begin promoting his catering business. He began working pig roasts across the state of Montana and soon recognized the need for a signature BBQ sauce to make him stand out from the competition. I imagine the first batch of Cecil’s Secret Sauce was probably created after getting “sauced” on Lord Calvert. It probably also ended with the last of the bottle going into the sauce! Maybe that was Cecil’s Secret! All I know is that this is the closest to the original Cecil’s Secret Sauce that will ever be made; the recipe he gave his daughter one month before his death. Throw too much of the Lord in there, and it’s so good that it’ll knock ya right on your kersa!
